Dinner over the river is still Kyoto’s coolest summer tradition
Kawadoko (川床) — Kyoto’s elevated summer dining terraces built over rivers — are returning to the Kamo River for another season of breezy lunches and candlelit dinners.
From May 1 to October 15, Funatsuru Kyoto Kamogawa Resort will open one of the river’s largest kawadoko spaces for seasonal lunch and dinner service overlooking the flowing Kamogawa River and the Higashiyama area.

The venue occupies a striking wooden building originally founded in 1870 as the traditional inn and restaurant Funatsuru. With more than a century of history behind it, the structure was designated a nationally registered tangible cultural property in 2012.
During Kyoto’s humid summer months, the riverside platforms become one of the city’s defining seasonal scenes. Around 15,000 people visit the terrace each year. In 2026, some July and August lunch courses will begin indoors before dessert is served outside by the river.

Kyoto-style French dishes built around the changing seasons and peak ingredients.
The Kyoto-style French menu changes with the seasons. Early summer lunch dishes include marinated Kanpachi (カンパチ), chilled corn soup, pan-seared Isaki (イサキ) and roasted Omi duck. Dinner offerings feature crispy-scaled Amadai (甘鯛) and Japanese black wagyu filet.
Lunch starts at ¥4,800, while dinner starts at ¥10,000, excluding service charges.
Kyoto summers may be intense, but dinner beside the river still feels like the city’s best survival strategy.
