The souvenir isn’t the sweets—it’s the tea bowl you actually used
A bowl of matcha tastes different when you whisk it yourself. At Coil (コイル), an interactive restaurant across from Kanazawa’s Omicho Market, a new experience invites visitors to prepare their own tea before enjoying it with house-made Japanese sweets.

Available from July 2, 2026, the Matcha Experience + Sweets Set lets guests whisk fragrant matcha using a bamboo whisk and traditional tea utensils. There’s no need to know the formal rules of the Japanese tea ceremony—the experience is designed to make one of Japan’s most iconic traditions feel relaxed and approachable.

The freshly prepared matcha can be paired with a choice of desserts, including Basque cheesecake, matcha gâteau au chocolat, or matcha soft serve. For those who can’t get enough green tea, a matcha dessert platter brings together favorites such as matcha tiramisu and matcha anmitsu, a classic Japanese dessert made with agar jelly, sweet bean paste, and fruit.
The matcha bowl used during the experience is also available for purchase, turning a simple tea break into a souvenir that feels genuinely personal.

Coil has already built a following for its interactive dining concept, where guests create their own thin sushi rolls and gunkan-style sushi from around 60 different ingredients. Matcha, sake tasting, and tea tasting are all part of the restaurant’s broader approach to making Japanese food culture something to experience rather than simply consume.
Served from noon to 5pm, it’s an easy addition to a day exploring Kanazawa—and proof that some of Japan’s most memorable cultural moments begin with a bowl, a whisk, and a little time.
