Nikko Monaka – A Sweet Journey Through History and Fruits
Opened on March 15, 2025, by GLOBALTREE・Ariakea Co., Ltd. (GLOBALTREE・アリアケア株式会社), Nikko Monaka(ニッコウモナカ) is shaking up Japan’s wagashi scene. Ancient monaka—over 1,000 years old—meets fresh seasonal fruits in ways that somehow feel both elegant and surprisingly playful.

Not your grandma’s wagashi. This is contrast in action: crisp monaka shells, velvety bean paste, chewy mochi, and vibrant fruit. It’s sweet tradition with a modern twist—and yes, it’s almost too pretty to eat. Almost.
The star? Nikko Saru-san Monaka(日光お猿さんもなか), featuring the Three Wise Monkeys (見ざる・聞かざる・言わざる). They’re iconic to Nikko, part of the shop’s logo, and a little mischievous—just like your sweet tooth.

Then there’s the Fruit Daifuku Monaka – Large Strawberry(フルーツ大福もなか~大粒いちご~). Made fresh when you order, it’s layers of perfectly crisp monaka stamped with the Three Wise Monkeys, smooth Tokachi azuki bean paste, chewy gyuhi mochi, and a whole strawberry that’s basically screaming “eat me now.” Juicy, sweet, crunchy—every bite is a tiny revelation.
Seasonal spins keep things interesting: Seasonal Fruit Daifuku – Strawberry(季節のフルーツ大福~いちご~)wraps chewy white bean paste around fresh fruit, giving daifuku a playful fruity update. Other temptations:
・Fruit Skewer Dango – Strawberry (フルーツ串団子〜いちご〜), coated with shiny strawberries and sweet azuki ・beans
・Nikko Miso Mitarashi (日光味噌みたらし), with a rich, savory-sweet glaze
・Nikko Sansho Mitarashi (日光山椒みたらし), with a signature spicy kick
・An Dango (あん団子), generously topped with Tokachi azuki bean paste
There’s a cozy eat-in space where you can watch the Three Wise Monkeys peek at you while you snack. Nikko Monaka turns wagashi into an experience: historical, artistic, fruity, and just a little cheeky.
