Someone in Japan decided sushi and strawberries belong together

At WASHU BLUE RESORT Fuka, a spring buffet mixes bite-size sushi with a full lineup of strawberry desserts.

Strawberries and sushi aren’t a classic pairing. Which is exactly why someone decided to build a buffet around them.

This spring, WASHU BLUE RESORT Fuka (和州ブルーリゾート風籠) in Kurashiki, Okayama is marking seven years since its rebranding with a seasonal event called “Sushi and Strawberry.” It runs from April 1 to May 31.
The setting is the resort’s buffet restaurant Ryugu no Tsukai (竜宮の遣い), where the menu jumps cheerfully between neat little sushi bites and strawberry-heavy desserts.

On the sushi side, the format leans toward small and decorative. Renge-zushi (れんげ寿司)—bite-size sushi served on ceramic Chinese-style spoons—comes topped with spring ingredients like bamboo shoots, red turnip, avocado and nanohana, a slightly bitter rapeseed blossom that shows up on Japanese tables every spring.

The wildcard is a sushi riff on Pani Puri (パニプリ), the crispy hollow snack popular across India. Normally filled with spiced water and chutney, here it’s reimagined as a bite-size sushi experiment—because buffets occasionally allow a little culinary mischief.

Then there’s Temari-zushi (手毬寿司), the small ball-shaped sushi often served at celebratory meals. Toppings include Seto Inland Sea sea bream along with shrimp and salmon, arranged in tidy, colorful rounds.

A live kitchen keeps things moving. Sushi chefs shape nigiri to order, while hand rolls stuffed with freshly fried shrimp arrive hot and crunchy.

Dessert, meanwhile, goes all in on strawberries. Six sweets appear, including a strawberry Mont Blanc and a strawberry roll cake. Seasonal sake from breweries around Okayama rotates through the drinks lineup for those inclined to pair rice with rice.

Dinner runs in two seatings: 5:30–7:00pm and 7:30–9:00pm. The day-visit buffet costs ¥9,900 for adults, ¥4,950 for elementary school children and ¥2,500 for kids aged three to five. Overnight plans with dinner and breakfast start from ¥25,500 per person (based on two guests per room).

The resort overlooks the Seto Inland Sea and includes a natural hot spring—useful after a night of sushi, strawberries and whatever that pani puri sushi thing turns out to be.
