Sushi Sakaba Yu keeps things casual while serving properly made nigiri
Sushi can feel weirdly intimidating. White counters. Silence. The quiet fear you’re about to misuse the soy sauce.
A new spot in Toyohashi wants none of that. Sushi Sakaba Yu (すし酒場 遊) opened on August 9, 2025, in Hamamichi, a neighborhood in Toyohashi, a city in Aichi Prefecture. The idea is simple: proper sushi, relaxed atmosphere. Think izakaya-style pub energy, but with carefully made nigiri.

The owner visits the market every morning, buying whatever fish looks best that day. Much of it comes directly from markets around Mikawa, the coastal region nearby. The menu leans into that freshness, with classic hand-formed sushi that lets the fish do most of the talking.
Inside, there’s a counter where you can watch the chef at work, plus tables for groups who’d rather chat than analyze knife technique. The room stays casual. No hushed reverence required.

Drinks play their part. Sake suited for sushi sits alongside beer, highballs and shochu, with small dishes designed to keep the conversation—and the drinks—moving.
You’ll find Sushi Sakaba Yu at 37 Hamamichi-cho Sakura in Toyohashi. It’s open from 5pm to 11pm, closed Wednesdays. There’s parking for three cars.
Good sushi, minus the ceremony. Honestly, that might be the best part. 🍣
