Shogun Pizza’s March special mixes Toyama’s spring delicacy with a tropical twist
Spring in Toyama means one thing: glowing squid. Now someone’s putting them on pizza.
For March only, SHOGUN PIZZA is serving Hotaruika to Mango Pizza(ホタルイカとマンゴーのピザ), a limited pie that pairs Toyama’s seasonal firefly squid with an unexpected partner—mango sauce.

Firefly squid, or hotaruika, are tiny deep-sea squid that surface in huge numbers in Toyama Bay each spring. Locals prize them for their plump bite and rich, almost buttery innards. They’re usually eaten simply—boiled, marinated, or tossed into pasta.
Here, they land on pizza.
The squid are topped with a bright mango sauce designed to cut through their deep umami. Sweet and tart against seafood shouldn’t work on paper. Occasionally, though, it absolutely does.

The brand itself specializes in one-hand pizzas built on long-fermented dough that stays light and airy. Toppings tend to lean playful, mixing Japanese seasonal ingredients with house cheeses. A gluten-free crust—developed with chef Hikaru Nakanishi of PIZZERIA ICARO—is also available.

Toyama’s spring menu just got a little weirder—and honestly, that feels about right.
