Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens now has a luxury sky bar in the forest

You reach The Veranda Kobe by ropeway — and the view gets stranger from there

Somewhere above Kobe, there’s now a terrace designed to feel like a luxury resort drifting through the forest.

The newly reopened The Veranda Kobe (ザ・ヴェランダ神戸) sits 400 meters above the city inside Nunobiki Herb Gardens (神戸布引ハーブ園), one of Japan’s largest herb gardens. Visitors reach it by ropeway, gliding over Kobe’s dense urban landscape before arriving at a mountaintop world of mirrored water terraces, open-air bars, and hammocks suspended above the trees.

Originally revamped in April 2026, the scenic complex blends the atmosphere of a classic Western-style Kobe residence with the kind of carefully choreographed nature aesthetics Japan increasingly turns into full-scale destinations.

The most striking addition is Emerald Lounge, a quiet terrace surrounded by reflective pools modeled after natural springs. Water mirrors the sky and forest so perfectly that the lounge almost appears to float in midair. The effect feels less like a café terrace and more like an infinity pool hidden deep in the mountains.

Nearby, Sky Bar turns Kobe’s skyline into cocktail scenery, while Hammock Sanctuary stretches giant hammock nets several meters above the forest floor, creating a strange floating sensation somewhere between relaxation space and art installation.

Inside Herbal Café, oversized windows frame the sea and mountains beyond, while herb-inspired interiors reference the surrounding gardens without slipping into theme-park territory.

From mid-July through late August, The Veranda Kobe will also introduce sunset and nighttime hours, when the city below gradually shifts from soft evening haze into glittering port lights.

Japan has become remarkably good at designing places that feel engineered for emotional escape — and this mountain terrace above Kobe may be one of the most visually committed examples yet.
