Miuraya: Old Ryokan, New Ways to Roam Zao Onsen

Some old inns fade into the past. Then one comes back, cooler than ever. Meet Miuraya(三浦屋), reborn on Zao Onsen’s Takayu Street. This long-shuttered ryokan just reopened as a chill spot with drinks, shopping, and tiny rooms for those who prefer strolling over spa marathons.

Inside, it’s all calm wood tones and old-school ryokan charm—but stripped of any loud bells and whistles. No huge baths. No arcade. Just a place that nudges you to step outside, wander the streets, and soak in whatever the town’s feeling that day—spring blossoms, summer greenery, autumn leaves, or winter crisp.

Downstairs, Kissa Kansosho(喫茶乾燥室)coffee spot is perfect for a pit stop. Grab a cup, peek at the curated local goods in the tiny shop—stuff you won’t find anywhere else—and maybe pretend you belong here. Upstairs, seven minimalist rooms (single, twin, triple) keep it cozy and fuss-free. Lounge? Yep. Free Wi-Fi? Obviously. Bar? You bet.

The kicker: the ski slopes are basically next door. Airports are a bit farther out, but hey, the mountains are worth it. More importantly, Miuraya isn’t trying to be a resort—it’s your front-row seat to Zao Onsen’s street life. Grab a coffee, wander, shop, sneak into a tiny bar if you like, and just let the old town work its magic.
